A charming antique pin beautifully made in 10k rose gold and set with genuine coral cabochons and woven hair.
These small bar pins were known as "lace pins" and were not just ornamental. They were used to hold something in place-to confine a length of lace at the neckline or at the throat, sometimes to attach drapery at the shoulder. They often had sentimental meaning, and frequently classified as sentimental jewelry or mourning jewelry when they include hair.
This pin features a windowed compartment with loosely woven hair and ten natural coral cabochons.
The coral is set in bezels embellished with tiny beads.
The pin has a gentle curve, the glass has beveled edges and a flat frame of gold around it.
Measures 1&1/8" by 1", the coral cabs are 5mm, the hair compartment is 5/8" by 7/16".
Excellent antique condition, no damage and minimal wear. There is a ring that was added, perhaps so it can be worn as a pendant... it can easily be removed if desired.
It closes with a C clasp and riveted tube pin stem that exceeds the length of the pin, a testament to its age.
Unmarked, it tested 10k with acid, total weight is 6 grams.
A fabulous and rare example of an antique Georgian lace/mourning pin c1800-30s.
