An extraordinary all original example of a tribal Indian necklace from Northern India.
The design features a repousse pendant of silver depicting Bhumiya Raj, who is a deified hero, a landed military proprietor or chieftain who died in defense of his property, village and the inhabitants. This type of amulet subject is worn chiefly in Western Rajasthan by Hindu Rajputs and Jats.
Beautifully detailed and nicely worn, the silver has a dark patina which can be polished if that is the desired look, I prefer to keep the integrity of the piece with the old patina.
The pendant is the centerpiece, there are eight hammered domes with beaded edges, the bail are embellished with beading and a small rosette.
Heavy thread is wrapped between the disks with gold and black thread.
The adjustable closure is a thread bead that slides along the thread to change the length.
The silver is not marked and tested sterling with acid. Total weight is 98.5 grams.
The pendant measures 1&5/8" by 2.5" including the bail, the hammered disks have a diameter of 1.25". Total length of the necklace is 45", it can be worn as short as 18".
Incredible workmanship and excellent all original condition, a truly fabulous antique 19th century Rajasthani tribal silver necklace.
