An elegant black derby or bowler hat in fine black felted wool.
The hard derby has a rounded crown with a slightly upturned brim, the style was created in 1850.
The wool felt is dark black, I lightened most of the photos so the details could be seen more clearly.
The edges of the brim are protected and embellished by a narrow ribbon of black grosgrain.
Another piece of sleek black grosgrain wraps around the crown and is finished off on the side with a subtle square bow.
Excellent condition, no damage and minimal signs of wear, very clean inside and out.
Made by John W. Green & Sons Inc of Danbury, Ct., the label is under the inside band.
Marked on the inside band with the store it was made for- Carbine's of Rutland, Vt. and Whitehall, N.Y. as shown in the 8th photo.
The marked size is 7&1/4, the measurements are: Interior circumference: 22&1/2", Brim circumference: 34", Brim width: 1&7/8", Hat height: 5&1/2".
Though traditionally worn by men, this style look just as fabulous on a woman.
A truly classic vintage bowler hat in superb condition.
