Original Art Nouveau Bookplate~ Woman & Panther ~Elias Leiberman
A unique and beautiful block printed Art Nouveau bookplate c1910.
The meticulous artwork is done in the sensuous Art Nouveau style.
The black and white design depicts a woman holding a chalice, a panther paces at her feet.
She is scantily clad with a luxurious fur coat draped from her shoulders.
The background has birds swooping in around her and stylized smoke or clouds highlighting the circle…perhaps the moon?
The *artwork is done in the style of Aubrey Beardsley or Erte, possibly made exclusively for the books of poems by **Elias Lieberman, American poet and educator.
His name is beautifully printed on the top right side.
Measures 3&5/8" by 5".
Excellent unused condition, the paper is very nice quality, the printings are crisp and clear, very slight yellowing around the edges.
This would be beautiful framed. I am also offering sets of three in a separate listing.
A stunning and unique treasure from the Art Nouveau period.
Please view the large photos for the best clarity and detail.
*Bookplates, also known as ex-libris, have since the 15th century been placed in books to declare ownership. Many artists, some famous such as William Hogarth, Aubrey Beardsley and John Piper.
**Elias Lieberman’s most famous poem, “I Am an America,” was published in 1916 by the popular periodical Everybody’s. The poem soon became a favorite, recited at graduation ceremonies and American Legion meetings.
