A wonderful antique serving spoon with a carved pearl bowl and brass handle.
Traditionally shell spoons are also called 'egg' spoons as they were used for serving roe or caviar.
The luminous mother of pearl bowl is beautifully carved into an acorn.
The brass handle is riveted to the pearl bowl.
The rainbow effect in the natural shell surface is mesmerizing, I love the back as the growth lines of the shell can be seen.
The brass handle is made from twisted flat sheet that is embossed with a foliate design.
The embossed design alternates with the plain side so it is visible in every other twist.
Excellent condition, no damage or visible wear, it has not been cleaned in any way.
Total length measures 7.5" long, the handle alone is 4&7/8", the bowl is 2&3/8" (there is some overlap) by .75" wide.
Perfect for serving serve sea foods as the sea salt will pit and damage silver, the natural servers will not be harmed.
An elegant antique pearl and brass spoon c1880-1900.
