An extraordinary antique hat from the Victorian period c1800s.
The exquisite quality of design, workmanship and materials are indisputable.
The luxurious hat is a hood style made from velvet and trimmed with silk ribbon and fur, it is lined with quilted silk over a layer of cotton wool fiber.
The lush velvet is a dark chocolate color, the fur which I believe to be beaver, is just slightly lighter with darker and lighter undertones.
The style was meant for warmth as well as high fashion, the back provides a cover for the neck and the sides cover the ears and lower.
The hat comes in the original, well worn box from Otto J Piehler, furrier from Boston at 12 Bromfield St. He is listed in the Fur Trade Review c1880s.
This style will fit just about any size head, the measurements *lying flat* as in photo #4 are: 11" long, 8" wide, 12" long in the back as it dips done to cover the neck, the ties are 15" long.
Condition is superb, the only wear is visible in places in the lining, certainly no distraction.
A fabulous, fine quality antique hat from the Victorian period.
