An extraordinary antique mourning cameo locket and chain made from gutta percha* c1870-80.
The necklace is quite amazing, all original and in fabulous antique condition.
The large oval locket features a beautiful Victorian woman in profile.
Done in high relief with great attention to detail- she has very fine features, each strand of her hair is distinct, a headdress is woven through her curls. Long drop earrings hang from her ears, her dress has fine folds below the U neckline.
Inside the cameo has two large compartments with ornate impressed designs covering all the surfaces, even the lip.
The locket hangs from the original gutta percha chain, the chain has thick oval links that are graduated in size.
The chain closes with a metal clasp and ring, the locket has a metal bail that is secured in the top of the locket.
Amazing condition, no damage and minimal wear, opens and closes perfectly, secure hinge.
Dimensions: The locket measures 2.25" by 1&7/8" by 5/8" thick. The chain is 21" long, the drop hangs 1.5" off the chain. The oval chain links graduate from .75" by .5" to 1.5" by 1". The three rings that hang off the chain are round, they graduate from .75" to 1&1/8". The final link that connects the round link to the locket is oval, it measures 5/8" by .5". The links range in thickness from 1/8" to 3/16".
