A wonderful early hand carved Victorian cameo with a fabulous rendition of 'Rebecca by the Well'.
Based on a biblical story, this theme was a favorite in Victorian period cameos.
The bezel set cameo has wonderful detail of a seated Rebecca with a goat at her side.
The scene has two houses, I love the one in the background as it appears in the distance with trees and a stone wall.
The frame is very ornate with applied grapes, leaves and acorns with curled wire, the designs sit on the twisted ribbon frame.
Amazing fine detail on the dimensional designs, especially the acorn caps and leaves.
Measures 1.75" by 1.25", the cameo alone is 1.25" by 1".
I closes with the old C catch and pin stem that extends beyond the frame, a testament to its age.
The condition of the cameo is excellent, no cracks or damage. The frame is all in tact and free of damage though it was soldered with soft solder- not unusual for such an early piece. The solder is visible on the back.
The construction makes the piece fragile and I would not recommend polishing which would put stress on it.
Lovely as is with its ornate frame with aged patina, this is a great antique Victorian cameo pin c1840-60.
