A most incredible antique watch chain that showcases the Georgian and early Victorian tradition of using the hair of loved one to create a piece of jewelry to remember them by. The chain is beautiful, the fob ornament is exceptional. The yellow gold chain is a snake style, the ornate dimensional ends are repousse in pink gold. The end that attaches to the fob chain is an amazing bird like serpent. Incredible, fine detail. The anchor is the crowning glory of this piece. The body of the anchor is wrapped in tightly woven hair. It is so fine it needs to be viewed under magnification to realize that it is hair. The cross piece is done with light hair, the rest of the hair is dark brown. A fine rope of twisted gold wire winds down the anchor. The end caps of the anchor are more of the amazing repousse gold work. The watch hook is the old style that unscrews to release the hinged hook. The condition is excellent, no damage or visible wear. The anchor has a slight sway at the top, I believe this was original to the construction. The chain measures 11.25" long. The anchor measures 1.5" by 1". It weighs a total of 11 dwts. This is a rare museum quality piece, a superb example of hair used in Victorian gold jewelry.
