Captain January by Laura E. Richards, wonderful small 5 1/2 by 7 1/2 inch book,- Shirley Temple movie created from story of a lighthouse keeper and his daughter. Has a lighthouse sketch having gold gilt rays on the cover. Published 1890 and 1892 Estes and Lauriat. Has a black and white illustration of and old bearded man with a young girl on his lap. Especially poignant with hand written poetic note to "dear little Marie with love and birthday wishes from Cousin Rita. O, a dainty little lady is our winsome, sweet Marie; Like a sunbeam in the shadow is her hair gold witchery. Her blue eyes are like cerulean skies above the earth in June and her voice is like the echo of the yellow .... tune. And her merry; lilting laughter serves as airy silver stars with the sound of ....But there's something makes her dearest than are angel's beauty could, for our darling's heart is bursting with sweet impulses of good. August Third, one thousand nine hundred..." The remainder of date missing. I had to iterate the note as it was so endearing. A few pages in at the front are loose including the note and sketch, the remainder of the book is intact. Stained, worn, scuffed - see photographs. One of a kind.
