A bit of the Greenbrier history:
The Greenbrier Hotel has been doing business in one way or another since it was built in 1778. It is still in operation and is a National Historic Landmark. It was owned and operated in the past by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Many Presidents and famous people have stayed in this sumptuous resort. The hotel has over 700 rooms along with 10 lobbies.
In 1942 the U.S. Army purchased the hotel and converted it into a hospital for soldiers who were treated at the surgical and rehabilitation center. In four years over 24,000 soldiers were treated there. It was known as Ashford General Hospital.
In 1946 it was re-purchased by the C & O Railroad and famed designer Dorothy Draper was commissioned to do a complete redecoration of the Hotel. The rhododendron pattern celebrating West Virginia's state flower was designed by her. This pattern was made by several manufacturers including Mayer, Shenango, Syracuse, and Homer Laughlin.
The famous hotel was purchased in 2009 by Jim Justice, a West Virginia business man and the Greenbrier continues catering to the rich and famous.
