Wonderful and rare example of the work of master china painter and artist George Leykauf. This exquisite Limoges porcelain plate is adorned with perfectly rendered violets exactly as you see them in nature. The plate he used as his canvas is a lovely ornate Limoges blank with scalloped edges and elaborate details in the mold, all embellished with gilding to frame his masterpiece. The plate is in mint condition, as is the painting. Size is 9-1/4 inches in diameter, and it is Limoges factory marked on the back JPL France in green. It is signed G. Leykauf '95 (1895). This is the final sale price.
George Leykauf (1860-1922) was born in Dresden, Germany, and studied at the Dresden School of Art. After a year with the Dresden factory, he came to Detroit, where he started his own studio. His name is synonymous with master china painters Bischoff and Aulich. His works are hard to find, and I am proud to offer this investment work of art.
