12" Home Made Ethnic Black Cloth Doll c. 1920s-30s
This is a 12" tall whimsical home made cloth black ethnic doll estimated to date from circa 1920s -1930s. The body is made from soft stuffed black knit stocking material. The hair appears to be black embroidery floss. The facial features are embroidered, with the eyes having a white cloth center with simple painted black eye dot. The maker has creatively used old bone curtain loops for earrings and bracelets. The skirt is made from long clear glass beaded fringe of the type used around old lampshades of the period. The belt/shoulder sash is actually an Art deco period metal mesh necklace re-purposed for the doll. There is additional trim used around the ankles, skirt and decorating the top of the head. Even the shape of the body is amusing, with out turned feet and hands formed by simply tying around the wrists.
Condition: The hair is mussed - but really does it matter? There are some old pin holes around the waist area under the "belt". There are a couple stitched on the front of the neck that may have once held some other embellishment in place that has been lost. Overall good condition for this sort of doll.
I think it is safe to say that this intriguing black doll is one of a kind. She can't fail to make you smile. She is the quirkiest doll I have and I have quite a few oddballs. I find her enormously appealing and hope you do too.
