c.1900 Arts & Crafts Moonstone & Bakelite Locket Pendant & Necklace Chain
This is a rare circa 1900 Arts & Crafts locket pendant on original matching chain, set with an oval orange Bakelite plaque and moonstone glass cabochons. The locket and chain are unmarked. The metal is silver tone base metal. The orange panel tests positive for Bakelite. The 'moonstones' appear to be glass. The Bakelite panel is surmounted by a silver tone flowering branch, with 1 real pearl and 1 small moonstone. The panel is surrounded by a ring of 15 moonstones. The matching chain has smaller moonstones set on alternating links, and closes with a lobed melon shaped push tab clasp. The locket opens to reveal 2 compartments with original frames and celluloid covers. They currently contain locks of reddish blond hair.
The locket measures 2" (2.375" with bail) x 1.625". The chain measures 21" plus a .625" drop link.
Condition: 1 stone on the chain has a crack visible under magnification. Minor surface wear to the moonstones on the locket. There is a tiny dimple indentation in the back Otherwise good condition.
I admire the Arts & Crafts sensibility that emphasized craftsmanship and design over the use precious materials and mass production. This is a highly unusual piece and excellent example of this style of jewelry. Something different for someone who likes the unusual.
