Victorian Carved Bog Oak Mourning Locket on Rose Bead Necklace
This is a very sentimental Victorian period carved bog oak mourning locket containing a dim photo of a young child, suspended for a necklace composed of beads molded as roses with tiny cut steel beads in between. It was a common craft during the Victorian period to make beads molded from processed rose petals, and I speculate that these beads might be actual rose petal beads, but they are so uniformly molded that I an not sure. The 16" necklace closes with a simple old fashioned clasp. The locket top slides to the side to show the photo. The hinge pin of the locket also forms the bail that attaches it to the necklace. This hinge pin/bail was broken and has been replaced in the same manner as the original.
The locket measures 1.25" x 1" x .375". The necklace is 16" long and the beads are .25".
Condition: hinge pin/bail has been replaced. Image of child is dim.
This is a personal memento from a long ago time, very sweet and endearing. It would make a nice addition to accessories for historical reenactments.
