This is a fine example of a Japanese Meiji era bird shaped menuki samurai sword piece that has been expertly made into a lovely brooch with the addition of a fitted pin back. Japanese sword mountings are the various fittings that hold the blade of a Japanese sword and menuki are ornaments on the grip. As the days of the samurai waned it was not uncommon for these beautifully crafted ornaments to be repurposed into jewelry. This beautiful Phoenix like bird is crafted from shakudo, an alloy of gold and copper patinated to a dark bronze color, with touches of other metals as highlights. The beak and eye are silver, and there are gold highlights on selected feathers. The brooch back has no marks. It has a standard pin back with functional roll over safety clasp.
This brooch measures 1.5" x .625".
Condition is good.
The Phoenix bird symbolizes rebirth or regeneration, a potent emblem for a warrior.
