This is a very unusual circa 1940s red insect bug brooch on original card marked Jewels by Albert Weiss plus a crown emblem on the bottom. The brooch itself is unmarked and, until I removed it to check, appears to have never been removed from the card. The brooch is set with a single ruby red faceted rhinestone in the insects head. The body of the bug is a gold tone base metal with a textured red finish applied to the wings and smooth red finish over the tail. The back has its original pin stem with functional roll over safety clasp.
This brooch measures 1.75" x 1.25". The insect is quite three dimensional, standing up about .75".
Condition is good. The card has a slight bend in it from the brooch and some age discoloration.
Unlike most insects, this fanciful red bug only has 4 legs - but that is how he was made - forever short changed in life. We are approaching a buggy cicada filled summer season so now is the time to get out your bug jewelry. What could be more fun than this whopping big red critter. Catch him fast before I decide to keep him for myself.
