This is an intriguing Mid Century Modern vintage glazed ceramic deer or horses brooch. This brooch features a pair of stylized glazed white horses or deer in raised relief against a dark blue background with light green at the edges. The brooch is unmarked. It has a standard pin back with roll over safety catch attached to the back.
This brooch measures 2" x 2" and is about .25" thick.
Condition is good.
The use of glazed pottery or ceramic material in jewelry became popular due to the limitations on the use of certain metals during World War 2, so in the 1940s and on into the 1960s jewelry makers and artisans were experimenting with other materials to make jewelry. Companies such as Elzac were pioneers of such usage, but since there are no markings I can't assign a maker to this piece. If you are a fan of Mid century Modern design than it will be apparent how iconic the design of this brooch is.
