This is a charming 4 piece set of 1950s vintage Japanese kimekomi or cloth covered dolls. This chubby foursome probably represents 4 palace musicians though all but one is now lacking their instrument. Kimekomi dolls are formed on a carved wood or wood composition base with elaborate silk brocade cloth tucked into grooves in this base. Head and hands are covered in white gofun oyster shell finish. Each of these dolls has hair arranged in a different manner and 3 out of 4 have peaked black hats. Each doll is 4.5" tall and about 4" deep and wide.
Condition: missing 3 instruments. 1 doll is missing both hands.
They are endearing little dolls. Their price reflects the missing parts.
