This is a fine antique Victorian period carved shell cameo brooch depicting a bird with outstretched wings flying from a tree branch. The carving is skillful and realistically portrays the swallow bird and the tree branch with leaves. The cameo is housed within a nice antique gilded brooch setting with curlicues around the border. The back has an old fashioned T hinged pin stem and C clasp. There are no marks on the setting. The metal does not test positive for either gold or silver, and is a gilded brass or Pinchbeck metal.
Condition is good. The brooch measures 1.75" x 1.5".
This is a very translucent cameo. The subject matter is uncommon. Swallows mate for life so during Victorian times swallows were used to symbolize faithful love. It is a fine and unusual antique cameo.
