This is a masked puppet doll a la Phantom of the Opera set within a home made boxed vignette scene. The box is an old wooden shoe shine crate. A child has painted a scenic backdrop, pasted a paper black and white floor tile on the bottom, added a chair, a scroll of music and the doll. The top and bottom front edges of the box are covered in red felt and probably once had home made signage. The commercially made doll is nattily dressed in an 18th century manner black suit with white lace cuffs and neck ruff. He has white painted stockings, black shoes with buckles, a black mask, and white wigged hair. He had a red silk cape as well but that has mostly shredded away. The doll appears to be made from pottery.

The box measures 13" x 8" x 5". The doll is about 10" tall.

Condition: The doll is in good condition, though his silk cape is shredded. The other elements must be judged on their child made charm rather than perfection.

If you like unique, and appreciate the imagination of a child, this little time capsule of play is great fun.
