This is a highly unusual antique German flat top hair style china head doll with golden blond hair, vivid blue eyes, and a matte overglaze finish over the skin tone areas. China dolls with this uncommon matte overglaze usually hide unrecognized among bisque aka parian type dolls. However this doll is not unglazed bisque. This family group of dolls with overglaze is only recently recognized as a group, though not yet identified by maker. As with this doll, the shoulder heads are typically pressed into the mold rather than poured and the insides of the heads are china glazed. On the outside the hair and eyes are china glazed, but skin tone areas are all given the extra matte glaze finish - which results in a very silky smooth feel to those areas. Several different models have been found with this matte overglaze feature, all with similar facial features, though hair treatment differs.
This particular doll is a large example, standing 25" tall and with a 5.75" tall shoulder head. She has an antique commercially made cloth body with sewn on blue leather boots and leather lower arms. Her clothing is an interesting antique home made outfit consisting of front laced top in salmon velvet and brown silk and matching skirt with a long train in back. The front of the skirt is made shorter to reveal the fancy trim of the cream colored wool challis underskirt.
Condition: The shoulder head is in good condition. No chips, cracks or repairs. One leather arm has been repaired, and there is a repair patch on one of the leather boots too. Salmon velvet is worn in spots, especially on the top front. Slight damage to straw hat.
This doll is special, and rare even. She would be an excellent addition to your antique doll collection.
