This HUGE Arts and Craft circa 1900 grasshopper brooch was probably made to be used as a shawl, scarf, hat or coat pin. It features a very realistic grasshopper perched on a leaf and facing a single round domed cabochon of speckled blue art glass. The grasshopper has a single red glass eye as well. The pin is safety pin style, formed from a single sturdy wire bent to make pin, hinge and clasp all from one piece. The grasshopper and blue stone are bound to the wire via integral metal tubes on the back. There are no markings and the metal appears to be bronze tone brass.

This whopper of a brooch measures 7" long from the point of the pin to the hinge. The grasshopper on leaf alone measures 3" long and the blue glass stone is just shy of .75" diameter.

Condition is good. Patina has been left intact and unpolished. There are some 'blobs' of solder on the curved end of the clasp, but these appear to have been placed there on purpose to create 'stops' to make sure the pin end doesn't easily slip out.

This is a 'do you dare' kind of piece, not for someone who prefers dainty wee pieces of jewelry, but rather for the bold individual who is happy to sport a whopping big insect on their apparel. Go for it!
