This unusual necklace was created during the Victorian period by linking 6 Georgian period watchcocks (watch cocks) from discarded verge fusee watches. The watchcocks are made from gilded brass but the necklace chain and clasp tests as 14K gold.

The necklace is 22.11 gr. total weight, approximately 7 gr. of which is 14K gold chain and clasp. The necklace is 20" long. The watchcocks are each about .875" x 1".

In the 17th and 18th century intricate covers called watchcocks were fashioned to protect the delicate balance wheels of fine watches. These covers were placed on the movement inside the watch cases, thereafter seen only when the cases were opened. The watchcock were made from a piece of brass cut to shape, pierced, filed and hand engraved with intricate designs, and finally fire gilded. The design was usually very elaborate with motifs such as stars, wheels, rosettes, architectural forms, birds, dragons, dolphins, lions, snakes, cherubs, heraldic and Masonic symbols, grotesque faces, mythological animals, flowers, urns, or even the artisan's name or initials. Each watchcock is unique no two exactly alike have ever been discovered. The original watches were scrapped for the gold and silver cases after newer new escapements that were better timekeepers were developed, but some watchmakers took the time to salvage the decorative watchcocks. A Victorian era fad to reimagine these decorative remnants in new jewelry forms came about. I have found watchcocks as rings, bracelets, brooches and necklaces.

I believe that this chain of watchcocks was originally done up as a bracelet, but at some point it was converted into a necklace with the addition of the 14K gold chain. So it is converted watchcocks made into a bracelet, later converted again into a necklace.

Now you have the opportunity to own this piece of watch history, as a beautiful necklace.
