This is an elegant antique Victorian era mourning Whitby jet brooch depicting a pair of crossed hands. The hands are beautifully carved and realistically formed. The back has an old fashioned T hinged pin stem and C clasp. This brooch was probably the center piece of a bracelet originally, and refitted to be worn as a brooch. There are still holes drilled int he ends and center back that would have accommodated the bracelet's stringing cord.
The brooch measures 3" x 1.675" and is .5" thick. It weighs 27.7 gr.
Condition: 2 middle finger tips are chipped, 1 on each hand.
I have never seen a similar Whitby jet carving before. I love the graceful way the hands are crossed over each other.
