This is a fabulously stylish 24" tall circa 1940s counter top manikin or mannequin doll figure with a complete set of original clothes, plus an extra dress. The manikin has an all over dark tan complexion, with reddish brown painted hair, delicately painted facial makeup, red fingernails and black high heel shoes. I estimate that the manikin dates from 1940s though the hairstyle actually looks a little more like 1930s to me. The hair is arranged with 3 flat swirls of curls on the top front of the head. and a soft horizontal roll on the nape of the neck. The style of shoes could be 1930s-1940s. Her clothing is closer to late 1940s early 1950s style, but I assume that in her working days as a countertop manikin she would have been regularly redressed in the latest fashion of the year.
Speaking of clothing, this lady has it all. She has bra, cotton underpants, and pale pink rayon slip - as foundation garments were of great importance back in the day. These undergarments are all well made miniature versions of what was actually worn then. On top she is wearing a outfit made from teal natural silk with a mod floral print trim and lining. the set includes dress, coat and separate collar. This glorious outfit would have been her special occasion costume. Her extra dress, by contrast, is a homey cotton dress in a rose print with a little net ruffle at neck and cuffs. All that one needs is a little apron to be ready for kitchen duty.
Condition: There is a discolored area around the base of the neck, indicating a repair. There are craze lines on arms and legs, and to a lesser extent on the face. Note that the left arm will come off, made this way to make dressing easier.
I have described this manikin as 'composition' however I am not sure exactly what that composition is. Some of these manikins were made from latex. I think this one might be latex with plaster reinforcement inside the body, but I am not certain.
It is with great reluctance that I offer up this elegant lady. I adore her style. She would be a smashing display piece in a vintage clothing store.
