This 13 1/2 inch tall Jeannie Walker was produced by Madame Alexander only in 1941 and was the company's first walking doll. This charming composition child is in her all original outfit, from her curly wig to her detailed outfit tailored with all the care you would expect from the Alexander company. In addition she comes with three delightful dresses. While these dresses appear to be homemade and hand stitched, they are beautifully and skillfully made. Neither the doll or her additional outfits appear to have ever been played with; I almost wonder if the doll was used as some aspiring seamstress or budding fashion designer as a model. Her original costume consists of a pink coat trimmed at the collar and cuffs with real fur and the matching bonnet is adorned with little fabric flowers. Underneath is her pale pink dress with an attached half slip and a pair of lace-trimmed panties. Her feet are clad in short ecru socks and black oilcloth shoes. Inside the coat is a label reading "Madame Alexander New York USA" and the label inside the dress states "Jeannie Walker Madame Alexander N.Y.U.S.A. All Rights Reserved." On the back of the doll are raised letters "Alexander Pat. No. 2171128."
This doll came from a local Austin estate and had been packed away for many years. Although the doll does not appear to have been played with, she does need a little tender loving care. Her coloring is still nice and bright, but there is light surface crazing and some very faint scattered spotting. Her curly wig is still pretty full, but has a case of "hat hair" and could use a bit of shaping. It still has its original little hairpins! Her jointing is a bit loose, especially her arms, and she should be restrung. There is no lifting of the composition, breaks, or chips. Her eyes are clean and open and close freely. Her original Alexander coat and bonnet have some light surface dust and could use a gentle cleaning. The bonnet has some scattered tiny faint spotting and the coat has a few faint small spots and a a few scattered pin holes. The most obvious are two tiny holes on the upper left sleeve. You have to look closely to find these minute imperfections. There is some slight loss in parts of the fur trim. The dress, which closes with a safety pin, is in much cleaner shape, perhaps because it was protected by the coat. The shoes have a little flaking of the black coloring. The other three dresses are in excellent shape; it looks like they were never worn and their coloring is clean and bright.
Jeannie is an early and unusual composition doll and is hard to find, especially in such good and all original condition. Her additional trio of hand made vintage dresses are collectible in and of themselves. This darling doll and her wardrobe would be a wonderful addition to any Madame Alexander or vintage doll collection.
