Up for sale is a signed( on the end of the ribbon. Hard to see, but there.) Howard Pierce, Calla lilly vase. This one has a classic flowing ribbon shape with a trumpet shapped mouth, asymmetrical vase. Satin to semi gloss glaze ina beautiful ivory color glaze. It is 8 1/4 inches tall, and 4 3/4 inches wide at the base. This is an original one of a kind work of art, not mass produced. It is in flawless vintage condition with one flea spot and one pin prick of green glaze that was incorporated into the original (probably by accident) before it was fired. Very difficult to see unless you are looking hard.
Howard Pierce is a listed California artist that worked from pre-1930 until his death in 1994. He is better known for his whimsical animal figures and huge commercial installations. His work is gaining value as he is recognized as one of the original California potters. This was originally purchased as a Howard Pierce from a dealer in Mesa, Arizona who was very familiar with his work. This would be a great investment piece as it is one of his earlier pieces, certainly pre-1950 and more likely very early 1930-1940 when he was working with more monochromatic glazes.
