We have for sale a Virginia Slavery Document. The paper is 7 5/8” x 12 ¾”. It has been folded and has two horizontal creases and two vertical creases. The paper is in good condition with the exception of a 1 1/2 tear on the right side and pin hole size tears where the horizontal and vertical creases meet. This is a slave trader's letter to the owner, requesting advice on what next to do with boy, "Billy", whether to rent or sell. October 4, 1848 from Orange, VA.
The document reads as follows: Orange Ct. H October 4th 1848 Mr. P. Smith Dr Sir The boy Billey's time is up with Mr. Hankins on Thursday 26th he wants to hire him for a mounth longer if you intend selling him i will give him up if we can argee on terms that is i not to furnish winter cloathing and pay for the ten mounths here Their is a trader here at present that would likely buy him if you do not cum You will please let me know your intencian as I want to hire him out should you change your mind Yours Resp Alex Daley
