"Dam Clever, These Chinese" is an original etching by Morgan Dennis. The etching measures 5″ x 3″ and the frame is 11″ x 9 1/2″. The artist signed in pencil. Both art and frame are in excellent condition. To help protect the art, bottom mat, backing and hinging are acid free, plus the glass is conservation clear to block out 98% of the UV rays.
Biography:
Morgan Dennis (1892 – October 22, 1960) was an American illustrator, etcher, author
and lecturer, known primarily for his paintings of dogs. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Long Island, New York. He studied art with William H. W. Bicknell in Boston, MA. He also attended the New School of Design in Boston, in Provincetown, RI where he studied etching. In England he studied painting.
Morgan worked for ten years for Boston newspapers until drawing dogs became his main interest. His dog illustrations appeared in many well known magazines and books. He was most particularly known for his depictions of Scotties. He was commissioned by the Black and White Scotch Whiskey Company to illustrate the "Black and White Scotties", a successful ad campaign used over many years. One of his murals, "The Dog House", is in the bar and lounge of the Sheraton Russell Hotel in New York.
For many years he lived in Key West, Florida. Morgan Dennis died in 1960.
