For sale is a small brass metal sculpture of a nautilus shell bird on a natural driftwood base. The piece measures 13 3/4" high and 9" at the widest point. It was created by Dutch/American artist, Steve Beunis. This is a special creation of Steve's, he used a natural nautilus shell for creating all of his Nautilus birds. The piece is in good condition.
Stephanus Beunis was born in Brabant, The Netherlands. He came to the USA in 1956. He is a graduate of KTA, a prestigious school of design and architecture, and holds a degree in ornamental wrought iron and sculpture.
Mr. Beunis studied for three years at M.T.S. art department. For two years he worked with his uncle, William Beunis, who was an architect. And in Holland, he worked with well known Dutch sculptor, Jan Koldeweyn, restoring and preserving some of Holland’s most historical castles and churches.
As a teenager, Steve was part of the Dutch Resistance during World War II.
For years Steve owned and operated The Blacksmith Shop, a workshop and gallery, in Kill Devil Hills, NC. His work has been exhibited in art shows and galleries across the USA and Europe where he has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards in his field. He and his wife, Fini, had three children.
