Many reproduction horse brasses have been made throughout the years but this wonderful piece is authentic and still in fine condition. 18 inches long by 3 inches wide, the leather background piece is still strong although nicely weathered. The four horse brasses are all original and include: Charles Dickens, a cute little gremlin holding a lamp, a horseshoe with an anvil depicting the famous Gretna Green blacksmith's shop on the border between Scotland and England, where marriages would be performed, and a wonderful proud lion in a scalloped setting. I have collected Martingales and horse brasses for years and enjoy them in my den, particularly in the evening when the light hits them. It's a spectacular sight to see the huge Clydesdale horses dressed for show in the brasses and braided ribbons through their tails and manes.
