This is a fantastic vintage Chinese Export nail guard pin in gilt silver filigree and enamel set with coral and turquoise cabochons. Nail guards were originally worn by the Chinese aristocracy to protect very long fingernails. Long nails demonstrated that you didn't have to do manual work. This brooch is beautifully decorated with blue and purple enamel as well as the coral and turquoise stones. The pin back fastens with a rollover safety catch. It dates to around the early part of the 20th century and it is marked Silver on the back, which typically indicates a grade of silver somewhat less than Sterling.
It measures 2 1/4 inches long and it is about 1/2 inch across at the widest point. It is in very nice vintage condition. There is some patina but the gold gilt finish is still present.
