This is a lovely vintage Italian hand painted portrait brooch of St. Fabiola set in 800 silver filigree and set with small coral colored stones. It can be worn as either a pin or a pendant as there is a bail on the back. There is a very faint 800 mark on the back for 800 silver which is a lower grade of silver than sterling.
It portrays Saint Fabiola who was an early Christian saint, associated with Saint Jerome. This portrait is after a well-known painting of Saint Fabiola by Jean-Jacques Henner. The painting was done in 1885 and it depicts the saint in a classical pose with her head and shoulders cloaked in a red veil. The original painting is lost, but it has been reproduced countless times. Saint Fabiola is considered the patron of women in difficult or abusive relationships and divorced women.
It measures 1 3/4 inches by 1 1/2 inches and it is in very nice condition. There are some little bends in the filigree frame, but I don't see any other damage.
