This is a wonderful vintage Chinese Export pin in gilt silver filigree and enamel. This was originally a nail guard of the type worn by the Chinese aristocracy. Long nails demonstrated that you didn't have to do manual work. This example is beautifully decorated with ornate designs in blue and purple enamel and it is set with a small carved jade stone. The pin back fastens with a rollover safety catch. It dates to around the early part of the 20th century. It is marked Silver on the back, which in the case of Chinese export pieces often indicates a grade of silver somewhat less than Sterling.
It measures 2 3/4 inches long and it is about 3/4 inch across at the widest point. It is in very nice vintage condition. There are a couple of small areas of enamel loss and the pin stem is slightly bent but still quite functional.
