This exquisite Victorian cameo is hand carved from helmet shell and is mounted in a simple 10K gold setting surrounded by tiny seed pearls. It represents the goddess Demeter or Ceres as is indicated by the sheaf of wheat on the right side of the cameo. The image is beautiful and the detail of the carving is exceptional. The pin back fastens with an older style safety catch and there is also a fold down bail so that it can be worn as a pendant. It does not have a fineness mark for gold content, but it has been acid tested for 10K. It has a hallmark on the catch which looks like an S but I haven't been able to identify it.
It measures 1 5/8 inches by 1 1/4 and it is in excellent condition. There are some stress lines in the shell visible when backlit, but no chips, cracks or other flaws.
