This is a vintage porcelain berry set, consisting of a master bowl and 6 small serving bowls which was imported to this country by A. A. Vantine. He was one of the earliest importers of Asian goods and his store in New York was in existence from around 1870 until the early part of the 20th century. I have a link in my Favorites that provides a history of Vantine's Oriental Store - be sure to read it as it is fascinating!
It is somewhat rare to find Vantine's porcelain and this is the first berry set I have seen. It is comparable in quality to the best Nippon porcelain of that period, but it is marked with the Vantine's marks. The master bowl is marked with both an impressed mark and a glazed backstamp and the individual bowls are marked with the backstamp only. The set is decorated in lemon yellow and trimmed in gold.
The master bowl is 10 inches in diameter and the individual bowls are 6 inches across. The set is in excellent condition. I see no chips, cracks or repairs. There are some small manufacturing flaws that do not detract.
