This is a beautiful little vintage Art Deco sterling silver dance compact or purse by Wightman and Hough of Providence, Rhode Island. They were in business from the 19th century until the early 1920s. This lovely little piece probably dates to the latter part of this time period as the engraved design is Edwardian transitional to Art Deco. It still has powder and rouge in the two round reserves in the interior, and the mirror is clear and bright. There is also a tiny lipstick holder which pulls out of the bottom corner (last picture). It is marked with the Wightman and Hough mark (W H in a shield) and the words Sterling Pat applied for.
It measures 2 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches and the mesh handle measures about 5 inches. It is in excellent condition with light surface wear.
