Royal Doulton New Cavaliers Series Ware Plate.
This lovely piece is part of a series of plates with various scenes that feature cavaliers, who resemble the Three Musketeers. This particular plate depicts 2 men playing dice. One cavalier is seated with dice, a bottle of wine and a tumbler on the table in front of him. The other gentleman is standing at the table with a piece of paper in his outstretched hand. Both men are wearing fancy garb, including hats with large colorful feathers. The bright colors include red, green, blue and yellow on a creamy background.
The style border on this example features a lion and shield design. The two-tone brown lions are paired together to face a white and blue shield, and the background is a lettuce green color. The inner and outer rims each have double bands of brown.
This is from an early Royal Doulton Series. Charles Noke, one of Doulton's most celebrated artists and Chief Designer for decades, introduced Series Ware to Royal Doulton very early in the 1900's. Noke designed 10 Cavaliers for this series and the line included different sized plates as well as pitchers, teapots, mugs and other items.
It is marked with an impressed mark that indicates the production date, but it is unfortunately illegible. The black stamped Royal Doulton mark dates from 1902 to 1922 and the style border on this plate was likely in production from 1908 until 1932, thus narrowing the date range to 1908 to 1922. In addition to the black Doulton mark, it has the Noke stamped signature. It measures about 8 ¾" across.
Condition: it has heavy overall crazing and minor surface wear. There is a tiny no-show rim nick that can only barely be seen at 8 o'clock on the reverse side picture.
This is a stunning piece. Imagine displaying a full set on a hutch or wall, or using an individual plate for serving wrapped candies! Don't miss the opportunity to expand or complete your collection, or to purchase an ideal gift for a favorite collector!
