Ridgways Verona Transferware Cheese Server.
This beautiful piece features a soft brown overall rose pattern with a brown handle on top and a gold rim on the plate. The dome top is tall and surprisingly lightweight. It has a moulded ribbed shape and three holes in the top, allowing the cheese to breathe. The handle is glazed to resemble a wooden branch, with gold trim. The cover sits inside the upturned rim of the plate. The plate has a scalloped rim formed by the moulded ribs that match the top.
It is marked with a partially worn Ridgways mark ca. 1891 and "Verona; England; 13". The dish is 9" across and ¾" high at the rim. The cover is 3 ½" high, excluding the handle.
Condition: light overall crazing on the cover as well as minor use stains on the bottom edge of the cover; no cracks or chips; minor loss to gold, mostly on the handle, retaining 80%; it has a tiny manufacturing flaw - an under glaze nick on the bottom rim of the cover that does not detract.
