Victorian Branch Coral Gold Filled Pin Brooch.
This tiny pin has an organic shape created with a coil around a beautiful piece of orange branch coral, mounted on a decorated oval base. It is 3-dimensional and the metal is gold filled. It has a c-clasp and is lightweight enough to wear on a summer blouse.
It is unmarked and measures about 1 1/4” across and 3/8” tall.
Condition: no breaks or chips to the coral; minor use and wear to the gold; some darkening on the back and at joints from patina and age; the original hinge and pin were likely replaced at some point and the pin stem is bent.
Pins like this were popular during the Victorian years, and coral was thought to ward off evil spirits or protect the wearer from evil, especially if it was worn by a child, so this diminutive pin was probably intended for a little one. Today, it could be used by either a child or adult!
