A Victorian 15ct gold jarretiere ( garter ) design festoon brooch set with emeralds. The body of the brooch styled as a swirling jarretiere with a crescent shaped buckle set with seven emeralds. From the body hangs a double section pendant. The upper section set with one emerald. The lower section styled as a jarretiere with a buckle set with three emeralds. Two Brazilian link festoon chains suspend from the body. Circa 1860. In original leather and velvet case. Measurements, north to south 2 5/8". West to east 1 5/8". Condition, very good. The case is slightly warped at the front edges, and has some wear to its top lining. the gold has been acid tested as 15ct gold. Though festoon brooches were typical of the 1840s. The jarretiere design would give this brooch a date of about 1860.
