A 16th century signet ring. Made of bronze, the bezel engraved with the letter P surmounted by a crown and flanked by a quill. Measurements, G B size U. U S size 10 1/4-1/2 ( this ring can not be sized ). Width of bezel 7/16" ( 1.1 cm ), width of shank at back 1/8" ( 3.5 mm ). Condition, Good- some wear and discolouration consistent with age. A nice example of a 16th century signet ring. Signets composed of initials surmounted by crowns were popular in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, see Catalogue of the Finger Rings in the British Museum, early Christian Mediaeval & Later.
