A Victorian festoon brooch. Of asymmetrical shape consisting of an intertwining engraved ribbon with corded wire edge and leaves and a trefoil shaped flower head set with garnets and a citrine. With attached Brazilian link festoon chains and engraved pendant drops. Circa 1855. Measurements, length ( from top of brooch to bottom of longest pendant drop ) 2 3/4" ( 7 cm ), width 2" ( just over 5 cm ), depth, about 1/2" ( 1.3 cm ). Condition, Very Good. The gold has been acid tested as 15 ct gold. A very good example of a fashionable 1850s brooch. Ribbon motifs were popular in the 1840s and 1850s being inspired from the fashion for ' cuir roule ' ( leather scroll ) ornament introduced into jewellery design by the French designer Edouard Marchand circa 1840.
