A small Maltese cross. Made of 15ct gold set with moss agates. The reverse with attached steel pin. Circa 1830. Measurements, length ( including suspension loop ) 7/8" ( 2.2 cm ), width 3/4" ( 1.9 cm ), depth just over 1/4" ( 5.5 mm ). Condition, Very Good. The gold has been acid tested as 15 ct gold. The early 19th century vogue for Maltese cross pendants was inspired by Admiral Nelson's mistress Emma Hamilton. Whilst she was in Naples with her husband Lord Hamilton she was given a Maltese cross pendant by Tsar Alexander of Russia in recognition of the charitable work she had done on the island of Malta.
