A Victorian prayer book. The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments, and other. Bound in purple silk velvet with gilt metal clasp and edges. The obverse set with a gilt shield engraved with the words ' Church Service'. Gilt page edges. The end papers decorated with floral patterned silks. The interior contains two pressings of leaves. Circa 1857. Measurements, length 5" ( 12.5 cm), width 3 1/4" ( 8 cm ), depth 1 1/2" ( 3.8 cm ). Condition, Very Good. The silk velvet has faded ( most notably to the spine ) and there is a tiny hole to the top front edge of the spine. One of the pressed plants has marked the surrounding pages. All consistent with age. A charming High Victorian Prayer Book dating from the same year as the Indian Mutiny.
