An 1830s Fob Seal. Circa 1835.
An 1830s fob seal. Made of 9ct cased gold. Decorated with chased foliage and ribbing. Set with chalcedony engraved with the initials MD. Circa 1835. Measurements, height 1 5/16" ( 3.3 cm ), width ( just over ) 13/16" ( 2.1 cm ), depth ( just under ) 11/16" ( 1.7 cm ). Condition, Very Good. The gold casing has been acid tested as 9ct gold. A good decorative example of a late Georgian fob seal. Gold casing a popular technique used in the manufacture of fob seals consists of a gold sheet applied over a base metal core.
