This is a lovely example of the delicate and sparkling jewelry produced in the old Czecho-Slovakia. This area was known for producing the lovely crystals that sparkle so brilliantly. Each crystal in this pin is highly faceted and based in a brass filigree setting. The large main amethyst stone is highly reflective and is surrounded by numerous smaller lighter pink purple round crystals. I believe this brooch is circa 1930’s.
Popular and elaborate style of jewelry, now known as Czech transitional style jewelry, was made in Bohemia. Bohemia became known as Czechoslovakia after World War I. This brooch is marked “Tchecoslovaquie” on the trombone clasp which indicates that this piece was made in Czechoslovakia for the French market.
Push-pull or Trombone catches were not referred to as 'safety' clasps until the later part of the 19th century. The Push-pull or Trombone catch was patented in Britain in 1850 and was used prior to 1890 in British brooch designs, well before they became popular in the other parts of the world.
MARK: “Tchecoslovaquie” on the trombone clasp indicating the piece was made in Czechoslovakia to be exported to the French market.
SIZE: The brooch measures 2 ½” wide and 2” tall and about 1” deep.
CONDITION: This pin is in nice vintage condition. The stones are bright and secure. The brass filigree setting is in good condition. The trombone clasp is in good working condition although a little trick at first. There is some very faint scratches on the large stone.
