It's been a while since we've had one of these gorgeous Victorian 'navette' rings in our inventory, so we're delighted to be able to offer this dazzling beauty to you today! Known as 'little ship', navette or 'marquise' shaped diamond and gemstones rings were highly popular during the Victorian period, with their lengthy and elaborate settings elongating the finger of the lucky lady wearing it! Mostly always set with either all diamonds, or diamonds + a few colorful gems like ruby, emerald, sapphire or opal, these glorious rings are as stunningly beautiful - and popular - today as they were in the 1800's.
This darling, circa 1880-1890, is unmarked but acid-tests no less than 14kt gold. The gold is a soft yellow hue with a somewhat pinkish glow, though predominantly 'yellow' by our eyes and pictures. Set within the navette are 27 spectacular antique-cut, mostly old-mine diamonds with incredible scintillation and clarity. Old mine & European-cut diamonds were designed to 'come alive' under candlelight, gas lamps and lower light conditions and these beauties don't disappoint. The largest central diamond, which measures 3.76 x 3.60mm in diameter, is SO clean that I've included a macro-photo for you to look within the diamond to see for yourself the high clarity. Per the recent appraisal we've acquired for this ring, its clarity grades VS1 with H color, and the diamond is estimated to weigh 0.20ct. We can't see any flaws within it! It is rare to come across so many clean old-mine cuts in one ring, and while no two diamonds are ever the same, especially with antique cuts, all but a couple of the diamonds in this ring show remarkable water-clean clarity. Additionally, none appear to have noticeably abraded edges, commonly seen in antique pieces containing clusters of diamonds.
Combined, the total carat weight for the ring is 1.50ct, however, without removing the diamonds from the setting, the depth has had to be estimated for all diamonds. The ring measures just shy of 1 inch in length, at 24mm, and is around 8mm at its widest. Resting long and flat on the finger, the height is no more than 3.50mm, perfect for busy hands where tall rings can get in the way!
Weighing 3.30 grams and currently a US size 5 (inner diameter approx 15.70mm), the shank is sizable, though we advise the use of a skilled goldsmith as to not interfere with the delicate structure of the setting and diamonds, given the age of the ring. Please always inquire about sizing before placing your order should you require it.
Victorian jewelry never disappoints in my opinion. Add this stunner to your collection today to continue her long journey!
