Are you familiar with the beautiful gemstone, spinel? According to the GIA website:
"Spinel is generally highly sought after by gem connoisseurs, and well-formed spinel crystals are in high demand among collectors."
But of course, some colours of spinel are rarer, and hence, more valuable than others. Red spinel is the most sought after. Again, according to the GIA website,
"Red spinel ranges from orangy red to purplish red, with pure red to slightly purplish red hues of medium to medium-dark tone considered the finest of all. "
And it is a degree of the latter, we believe, that we have here.
This emerald-cut red spinel and diamond ring came into our possession again through our favourite high-end estate auction house who described this, prior to auction, as a "red spinel weighing approximately 1.55 carats, and of a medium dark tone of reddish, violetish, pink colour, lightly to moderately included."
This stunning ring, designed and hallmarked "Prosper", a Canadian company whose designs are considered amongst "the best in the world" and whose "Le Soleil cut took First Prize in the combination cut category in 2002" is fashioned from platinum and weighs an impressive 12.2 grams.
Adding to the overall beauty and quality of this size. 6.5 ring are 0.70 carats of diamonds of H - I colour and Si1 - Si2 clarity. As you can see from the photos, these diamonds have been beautifully set into a stunning arrangement in the sides of the band and around the 10mm X 7mm red spinel.
The top of the ring rises 6mm above your finger; the mount measures approximately 13 mm long by 11mm wide. Where the split diamond band meets the top of the ring at the sides, the width is 5mm, tapering into one piece at the bottom measuring 3mm. With a weight of 12.2grams with all that platinum in this ring, it feels very solid indeed.
Though the Prosper company is still making rings today, as you can see by looking at the hallmarks inside the band, this is far from a new ring. The estate auction house rates its condition as "very good" but mentioned that two diamonds have small chips. Well they sure must be small because we couldn't find them! I doubt you will either without a powerful jeweler's loupe!
So, if you want a beautiful ring with a rarer gemstone of lovely colour, accented by diamonds and set in platinum, consider this award-winning designer's ring. Unique, stunning, valuable: a winning combination.
